Practicing and talking about language in the classroom is a great point. An example that took my fancy was the wording of decimals making 3.7 sound smaller that 3.26. Some activities in the classroom can help students relate the language to the meaning of the maths, opening up good potential for your 'real life' classroom activities.

I'm not sure that there will be a lot of jobs that use a graphics calculators in future, but certainly the technological competency would come in handy.

I agree that students can become lazy and the skill of graphing by hand will be lost. Introducing the graphics calculator to only those students who have mastered the skill could prove problematic in the classroom. I would not look forward to teaching a class that only some students could use the graphics calculator. I feel that all students should have the chance to use this technology, it may even assist the students who were having problems.

Spot on. Students need to be well aware of the pitfalls of any technology they use. Although I think that surely graphics calculators can only help students to visualise graphs, e.g. by exploring what happens as we change different coefficients. The times they are a changin'.

Nice blog that covers the main issues. Don't forget to try to enhance your future blogs with links etc where possible. For example, you could have included a link to the Monty Hall website when you talked about it.

I agree that simpler definitions of 'numeracy' should be possible, but some of the wider opinions of 'numeracy' draw in interesting ideas which may both further clarify or confuse the use of this word. Rowe (1999) makes them point that numeracy shouldn't involve excessive requirements or high levels of 'verbal reasoning abilities'. This brings into the picture an idea of how 'numeracy' might be tested, and widening the debate into how 'numeracy' might be defined.
